Gauge independence of the bubble nucleation rate in theories with radiative symmetry breaking.

چکیده
In field theories where a metastable false vacuum state arises as a result of radiative corrections, the calculation of the rate of false vacuum decay by bubble nucleation depends on the effective potential and the other functions that appear in the derivative expansion of the effective action. Beginning with the Nielsen identity, we derive a series of identities that govern the gauge dependence of these functions. Using these, we show, to leading nontrivial order, that even though these functions are individually gauge-dependent, one obtains a gauge-independent result for the bubble nucleation rate. Our formal arguments are complemented by explicit calculations for scalar electrodynamics in a class of Rξ gauges.

Bubble Nucleation in Theories with Symmetry Breaking by Radiative Corrections
In any first order phase transition a quantity of fundamental importance is the rate at which bubbles of the equilibrium (“true vacuum”) phase nucleate within the metastable (“false vacuum”) phase. The bubble nucleation rate per unit volume, Γ, can be calculated by a method, due to Coleman, 1 which is based on finding a “bounce” solution to the classical Euclidean field equations. Thus, for a t...
متن کاملVacuum decay in theories with symmetry breaking by radiative corrections.
The standard bounce formalism for calculating the decay rate of a metastable vacuum cannot be applied to theories in which the symmetry breaking is due to radiative corrections, because in such theories the tree-level action has no bounce solutions. In this paper I derive a modified formalism to deal with such cases. As in the usual case, the bubble nucleation rate may be written in the form Ae...
متن کاملRandall-Sundrum and strings
We investigate stringy excitations in Randall-Sundrum effective theories for electroweak symmetry breaking arising from embedding in string theory. RS is dual to a confining gauge theory, which we expect to have “QCD strings,” or color flux tubes. Stringy constructions of RS-like theories allow us to investigate the mass of these string states, which typically grows with a small fractional powe...
متن کاملProgress on Chiral Symmetry Breaking in a Strong Magnetic Field
The problem of chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong magnetic field is briefly reviewed. Recent progress on issues regarding the gauge fixing independence of the dynamically generated fermion mass is discussed. Gauge theories play an important role in our understanding of a wide variety of phenomena in many areas of physics, ranging from the descriptions of fundamental interactions in ele...
متن کاملGauge Symmetry Breaking in Gauge Theories—In Search of Clarification
The paper investigates the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries in gauge theories from a philosophical angle. Local gauge symmetry itself cannot break spontaneously in quantized gauge theories according to Elitzur’s theorem—even though the notion of a spontaneously broken local gauge symmetry is widely employed in textbook expositions of the Higgs mechanism, the standard account of mass gen...
